Because of its ability to operate from short and unpaved runways, the H model Hercules was originally given a tactical airlift role. Its long range and ability to fly in adverse weather also made it ideal for search and rescue operations, in which capacity it is now tasked. Two of the H models have been converted to air-to-air refuelers, participating in missions such as Iraqi no-fly zone enforcement and the Libya Air Campaign. The H models have also supported the Canadian contingents of numerous UN missions and conducted many humanitarian airlifts.
