The Northrop F-5 received numerous upgrades to become the CF-116. The CF-116 was purchased as a tactical fighter to support the Army and to serve in Europe in the event of an emergency. It would operate with 433 and 434 Squadrons in this role. The Freedom Fighter would also serve as the lead-in tactical fighter trainer and support combat training.
